Bye Bye to GM

My truck, which only has 87,500 miles, was going to rest nicely in front of our house until someone bought it or I returned home. On the day before I leave for Argentina, the transmission on my ‘99 Tahoe “pops” and the reverse gear no longer works. There is also an eerie whining noise. I took it in immediately and it appears the repair will set me back about $1200. Since it’s hard to sell a vehicle without a functioning transmission, I will be bending over and grabbing the ankles again thanks to the good folks at GM.

I replaced the engine almost exactly 2 years ago when it had merely 70,000 miles. I bought the truck with 50K. Both the engine and transmission have managed to fail within 37,500 miles! My friends with Toyotas and Hondas are laughing at my foolishness right now and I cannot argue with them. There is a reason GM, Ford, and Chrysler are struggling mightily. American car building is like the French building a national defense. Why even bother when it’s going to fail and someone else will come in and do it for you more effectively? Speaking of the French, upon my return to North America, I will look to our friends in Japan or Germany to help with my next vehicle purchase.
