Starting to Belong
The last couple weeks haven´t been really exciting, but they´ve been very nice. When one stops speaking English, it´s harder to make friends at the school. However, my speaking ability has improved infinitely. I want to do some traveling in January or February, but at the same time, I don´t want to take a break from my learning. Not sure what my decision will be.
Right now I´m looking for an apartment for the beginning of January. Romina found one in Palermo (where I currently live) for only $US400 a month with everything included. Definitely a great price for a major world city. The pictures look nice, but it may not have air conditioning. I´m going to do some more searching online and see what I can arrange. I can´t wait to start cooking my own food again!
I´ve met a really nice group of 4 girls from church that have befriended me. Wednesday I was over at their apartment for about 4 hours. We walked through part of their neighborhood, got some extremely bad pizza, and talked for a while. Valeria is leaving for Brazil in January in order to teach Spanish, so I brought some instructional books from my language school to help her. We also talked briefly about the possibility of me obtaining a job as an English instructor. She´s going to help me with my resumé and offer suggestions of possible places to work. Once she´s done teaching her third graders in a week in a half, we may have some Spanish classes in order to my accelerate my learning and help her practice teaching.
Last night, I met up with Vanessa to go over my essay for Avanced Level 2 at school. This essay was much easier, but I am still really bad at writing in Spanish! Many times I am able to think in Spanish while speaking, but such is not the case when writing. The sentence structure is much different and often my English thoughts just don´t mesh with the language. She helped me fix a lot of errors so that my ideas were more clear.
Now I have a place to go for Christmas! I don´t have to spend it with a group of Swiss students in a small apartment somewhere. I´m relieved and very excited. Vanessa invited me and Monica from church to celebrate Christmas with her family outside of Buenos Aires. It will be great to spend the Holidays with a family and enjoy the warmth they bring. I guess I´m not the typical foreigner because I make more of an effort to befriend the Argentine people and don´t keep a distance like many others. As of right now, they seem to enjoy my company.

kyle, i think it’s awesome that you are focusing on befriending argentines and really absorbing/understanding the culture. sometimes when outside of your country and culture it is easy to gravitate towards those who are more like you and can relate; they can bring a welcome familiarity. but the point of traveling and living abroad is to learn a differnt way of life. i’m impressed with your efforts to do so. i hope you have a very merry christmas in the hot summer sun!
Kyle,
What is up?? Llame me! I enjoy reading your blog, but it’s too hard to sit here and comment. Call me.
