Day 12, El Calafate

Day 12, 3/23/07
The bus from Puerto Natales left for El Calafate at 7:30 a.m. I sat next to a girl from the UK that had quit her job and was traveling the world. (I can’t tell you how many people I run into down here who have done something similar and are on long trips). It was a rather uneventful trip of 6 hours as we spent an hour twiddling our thumbs at the customs office. I met a nice 34 year-old American guy while we were waiting in line. He was living in Washington D.C., so I mentioned that I had worked there for 4 months with the Heritage Foundation. Add to that the fact that I attended ORU and he was able to pinpoint rather quickly where I fell in the political spectrum. We had a nice chat as he mentioned he’s planning to go to work for John McCain in his 2008 presidential campaign.

Upon returning to El Calafate, we first purchased some cheap plane tickets to Bariloche with LADE. Later I walked up and down Libertador Avenue for a while trying to decide what kind of excursion I wanted to take to Perito Moreno the next day. I finally opted to do the minitrekking, which would allow me to walk on top of the glacier for about an hour and a half. That night, I dined alone and had a rather large portion of lomo for the third time during the trip. At 9:00 it was off to the locutorio to connect with Vanesa via Messenger. We had a nice chat for close to an hour and a half and it was obvious she was really missing me. It was nice to at least see the blurry picture of her on the webcam.
