Flight to Ushuaia
I bought my plane ticket to Ushuaia today and will be flying on Thursday the 31st. LAN, which is a well run Chilean company and the best option for flying here, offered fewer flights and were booked solid until the middle of February. LADE specializes mainly in cargo flights, but also provides limited passenger service on certain days of the week and at cheap prices. They were booked until the end of February. That left Aerolineas Argentinas, which by far offers the greatest volume of flights but is in the middle of what could be kindly called an absolute breakdown of customer confidence and satisfaction. I can’t remember which one it is, but either 1/3 of their flights are delayed or canceled or only 1/3 of the flights depart on time. Either way, they’ve got some work to do. But regardless, I’m happy. Yesterday it looked like I’d have to take a 5 hour flight with one stopover and would have to go to the more distant Ezeiza International Airport for my departure. However, today I found a direct 3 hour flight for the same price that leaves from the Aeroparque, which is only 10 minutes from here and whose cab rides are only 15 pesos. Leaving Thursday will get me there much earlier than needed, but I’m ready to leave and flights for the three days after were $150 more. (One side note is that you have to declare your nationality on the website and your ticket price is significantly more if you’re a foreigner–just like the national park system. Interesting. At least I won’t have to deal with a TSA agent.)

HI, thanks for your advice on airfare to Ush. we will be traveling to Argentina at the end of March/early April and i’m currently trying to buy tickets. From your experience, which airline seems to have the best offer, I am finding about 262 for a one way with Aerolineas and wanted to know if this was a good deal or to keep looking. I can’t seem to find anything on Lade, and Lan is ridiculously $$ ($350 one way). ANyway advice is much appreciated (as travel hind site is 20/20)
Also, after getting to Ush, what is the best way to travel north (as in destination El Calafate?, bus?) Do you know anything about boat tours in Strait of Magellan?
Thanks ahead of time for any advice, hope ur having a great time down there!
Nicola
Awesome man! We will be sailing to Argentina by the end of the year. It’s one of the countries I’m most looking forward to. Have a good trip! Jason
The prices you are finding are common. Aerolineas has more flights, but their service can be terrible and they frequently have delays or cancellations. LAN is the best option, but they have fewer flights.
To get to El Calafate, you can either fly or take a bus. That one’s up to you depending on price and availability. I do not know anything about boat trips on the Straight of Magellan. Sorry.
I apologize for being slow in responding, but I had some things come up and didn’t have much of a chance to respond. Please let me know if I can be of any help if you’re still traveling.
