Somehow I found a way to do it. Sigh. Last Friday I was setting up a separate blog for my photography Web site. As I was doing that, I deleted what I thought were some old, out of place files. I didn’t realize that I was actually deleting my entire blog. This was due to a restructuring of the files that I had done earlier in the year with my Web host. I got a sick feeling in my stomach when I realized what had happened. I emailed the hosting company’s outstanding technical support and they restored my files for a fee of $75. Paying that much frustrated me, but it was preferrable to losing everything I had written over the last year or more. But even with the files restored, the blog was still broken. Yesterday afternoon I figured out that my writings were stored somewhere else on their servers and not within the files they had restored. This scared me a little and I thought maybe they had been lost permanently. I emailed technical support again and, fortunately, they restored the blog this morning. I’m missing some writing from July through September, but I can get over that–especially since I haven’t written much this summer. Some pictures will have to be restored, but I’m grateful to have my writings from Argentina. Needless to say, I have installed a backup solution and now have it set up to email me a backup file once a day. I look forward to getting back into writing, having a fresh mind, and being able to think again. I’ve been so tired the last few months and it will be nice to be thought provoking and maybe even a little witty at some point in the future.

If you’d like a gravatar to show up here whenever you comment, sign up here, follow the directions, and you’re good to go.

I just opened a new blog called Buenos Aires Insider. It will feature writings and photos about city life in Buenos Aires. My hope is to share some of what it’s like to walk the streets and live here. Also, it could turn out to be a resource for other travelers once I have accumulated a larger collection of articles. It’s in the very beginning stages, but I’m excited about the idea! If for no other reason, I find this blog intriguing because it will be a keepsake of many of the unique, small memories of living in BA.

Some articles will cover small joys and frustrations while others may deal with larger issues in Buenos Aires and Argentina. I hope you enjoy it and please let me know what you’d like to see or learn about the city.

Sorry folks. It’s going to take a bit longer now because an unforeseeable circumstance has arisen. The screen on my normally dependable MacBook Pro has gone haywire. I don’t know what’s going on, but there are lines all over the screen. Oh how I wish this had happened when I was home in the United States! I’m going to take it to the Apple Store today in order to get it back ASAP. I hope they can fix it here in BA and that it won’t take more than a few days. If they have to ship it back to the U.S., I don’t want to think about how long it could take.

Update: My laptop is back after only 3 days. Buenos Aires may not be as advanced as the U.S. but there are still many nice things here. The Apple Store is one of those and is an oasis in the barren desert of customer service that is Argentina. More articles and site updates are on the way!

Being home for the past 2 1/2 weeks has been phenomenal. The time is flying by and I feel so fortunate to have this time with my family. I am more relaxed, joyful, and mentally sharp. The hamster inside that little brain of mine is once again running at full capacity.

I started my blog back in September of last year as a way to journal my time in Argentina and keep in touch with family and friends back home. I’ve tried to write about a variety of topics as openly and honestly as possible. For the most part, I have done this. However, as I look over my posts for the last few months, the posts have been more sporadic and of an inferior quality. For this I apologize. My mind was cloudy at times and I did not take the time to write as I had before. Also, I realize at times it was too much about Vanesa and my emotions. I will continue to be forthright and transparent, but I also need to keep a few more things to myself. During the coming months, I will put forth my best effort to balance sharing my personal experiences and thoughts while also preserving a bit more privacy.

Blogging has taught me a wonderful thing about myself: I really enjoy writing. While I was cognizant of this before, blogging really helped me see this ability. There is something about taking the time to write that allows one to understand and examine themselves. Putting thoughts into words keeps the wheels of the mind turning continually. Blogging helps me think about the world around me more because I’m always wondering, “What can I write about next?”

I still have 10 days at home in the United States. After that time, look for some updates to this blog. I already have domain space and am looking at creating a small network of blogs where each site has a more specific focus. If there are topics you’d like to read about or specific changes you’d like to see, please feel free to email me.

Thank you to everyone who finds this page interesting enough to keep coming back. I enjoy receiving comments and am amazed at how many people I do not know that try to keep up with my writing. Thank you all very much and happy reading in the months to come.

My apologies for the lack of updates. I moved into a new apartment last week and in typical Argentine fashion, have to wait 12 days for the cable company to come and flip a switch to give me cable and Internet. I´m using the locutorio to do only the essentials and saving everything else for Thursday when I have Internet. Try not using email, instant messanging, Google, Wikipedia, online banking, checking weather, or doing anything online for 2 weeks. It´s a lot harder than you might think and it´s driving me nuts! Sorry again, and I´ll be in touch soon.

Even though I am a self-professed computer geek, the blogging world remains uncharted territory for me. But with my trip to Argentina now a short 3 weeks away, it seems like a good time to join this Internet subculture. People always encourage us to journal our life experiences and since I’ve never kept a journal for more than 2 days, blogging seems like an excellent alternative. A coming together of my techno, introspective, and communicative sides.

Throughout my trip to Argentina, I will post pictures, stories, and comments in an effort to communicate and share my experience with those in the good ol’ U.S. of A as well as anyone else that stumbles upon this blog. This will also be my personal keepsake to archive when I have finished my journey to Argentina, so please don’t blame me if there are more detailed minutiae than you care for–just skim as needed. Please feel free to post comments and keep in touch.
